The Wisconsin Statistical Analysis
Center (SAC) is statutorily responsible for collecting statewide crime and
arrest data from all participating law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin. As
mandated in S.16.964(1)(g), Wis. Stats., OJA is required to collect information
on the “number and nature of offenses known to have been committed in this state
and other such information as may be useful in the study of crime and
administration of justice”. The statute specifically directs OJA to collect data
required by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for its Uniform Crime
Reporting (UCR) program. The agency’s UCR functions includes collecting,
validating, synthesizing, and reporting monthly crime data for nearly 400 law
enforcement agencies. These data are then organized in an annual statewide
report, as well as submitted to the FBI for trend and comparison reports on
crime in the United States.
In addition, the SAC is legislatively responsible for serving as a
clearinghouse of justice system data and information, and conduct justice system
research and data analysis. Major SAC products have included annual statewide
reports on crimes and arrests, sexual assaults, and jails, as well as numerous
other topical reports.
